The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences announced in late June this year that it is doubling the number of Best Picture nominees from five to ten. This allows for more commercially successful films to enter as well as more independent, foreign and animated features.
One film that has already got the public and media talking Oscar-potential is the Peter Jackson-directed supernatural drama The Lovely Bones. Despite not yet being released and seen by the general public, the film has generated enough Oscar buzz to include possible Academy Award nominations for its cast.
The Lovely Bones is based on Alice Sebold’s novel of the same name, and an Oscar hopeful for director Peter Jackson. The story is told through the eyes of a fourteen year old girl who was brutally raped, murdered and disposed of by her neighbour.
The film made its world premiere in London at the Royal Film Performance charity event, and although Her Majesty the Queen was unable to attend, Prince Charles and Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, were there to meet and greet the cast.
Reviews have flowed in with a clear division between those who judged the film by its book and those who favoured the film whether they read the book or not.
Fans of the book have already taken to the fantasy element of the film and created fan-videos based on the released film trailer.
