The Last Station is one of the few films to be a possible contender for Academy Award nominations that combines romance, comedy, drama, brilliant performances and a well-scripted screenplay.
Based on the novel 'The Last Station: A Novel of Tolstoy's Final Year' by Jay Parini, director Michael Hoffman wrote the screenplay and has gathered a stellar cast including Helen Mirren, Christopher Plummer, James McAvoy and Paul Giamatti, which is certain to attract Academy Awards voters' attention.
Already screening in the US on a limited release in cinemas, The Last Station follows the final year of Russian author, Leo Tolstoy's life when he renounces his noble title, leaves all the rights to his famous novels ('War And Peace', 'Anna Karenina') to the Russian people, turns celibate and vegetarian - much to the horror of his wife, Sofya, the Countess. Sofya suspects Tolstoy's disciple, Vladimir Cherkov, to be the driving force behind the change in her husband, so she embarks on a complicated but comedic pursuit to fight for what she believes is her family's legacy. As her behaviour grows more extreme, Cherkov convinces Tolstoy that she will destroy his newly created religion. Tensions arise when Tolstoy's assistant Valentin is used as a pawn by Cherkov and Sofya, who each try to out-wit and out-manoeuvre the other.
The reviews for preview screenings of The Last Station in the US and during its screenings at various Film Festivals have been positively glowing and makes it an early favourite for nominations in the upcoming awards ceremonies. The Last Station has already been nominated for two 2010 Screen Actors Guild Awards and two 2010 Golden Globe Awards, both for Helen Mirren and Christopher Plummer.
Possible Oscar nominations include Best Picture, Best Leading Actress/Supporting Actor, Best Director, Best Costume Design, Best Cinematography and Best Screenplay.
A release date for The Last Station in Australian cinemas is yet to be confirmed.
