Director Kathryn Bigelow (Point Break) initially pushed aside The Hurt Locker so she could begin working on a film based on Erik Larson's book, The Devil in the White City, until director and former-husband James Cameron (Avatar, Titanic) convinced her to take on the project. Luckily, she did. Kathryn Bigelow's tenacity and meticulous attention to detail has won The Hurt Locker plenty of kudos from film critics and filmgoers, with excellent performances from the cast adding believability to the drama. The Hurt Locker is based on freelance journalist Mark Boal's personal experiences during his time as an "embedded" media correspondent with an American bomb squad during the War on Terrorism in Iraq. The film has arthouse credibility and potential commercial success, and audience reception from the limited release screenings across the US have been positive.

The film is not about the war itself but focusses on the work of bomb disposal teams and brings the audience closer to the action, as though they are beside the soldiers as the bombs are defused. Parts of the film are shot in documentary style using hand-held cameras which adds to the viewers' proximity to the action. The film's title originates from slang used by the soldiers to describe being in a highly dangerous or extremely uncomfortable place. The main characters Sgt. J.T. Sanborn (Anthony Mackie) and Specialist Owen Eldridge (Brian Geraghty) recently lost their team leader in a bomb blast, so Sgt. William James (Jeremy Renner) takes over the team. While Sanborn and Eldridge are cautious and careful, James doesn't follow protocol, shows over-confidence, fearlessness and his cowboy behaviour usually puts his team members' lives in danger as well as his own. Evangeline Lilly (TV series Lost) has a cameo appearance as William James' stay- at- home wife with a baby. Other cameo appearances from Ralph Fiennes (The English Patient, Schindler's List) who played the lead in Kathryn Bigelow's sci-fi action drama Strange Days, Australian actor Guy Pearce (The Road, The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert) and character actor David Morse (The Green Mile, Disturbia), ramp up the dramatic intensity as the elite team diffuse bombs amidst enemy attack.

Recent films on the subject of terrorism/Iraq War (In The Valley Of Elah, Stop-Loss and Rendition) have not received the critical acclaim or audience support The Hurt Locker has enjoyed. After winning two awards recently, Best Picture and Best Director at this year's Critics Choice Awards, The Hurt Locker is shaping up to be an impressive contender for Academy Awards nominations.

In the upcoming Screen Actors Guild Awards ceremony. The Hurt Locker has been nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture and Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role for Jeremy Renner.
Possible Academy Award nominations for The Hurt Locker include Best Director, Best Picture, Best Cinematography, Best Original Screenplay, Best Editting and Best Lead/Supporting Actor.

According to film distributor Roadshow, The Hurt Locker screens in Australian cinemas from 25 February 2010.
