Director Lee Daniels' (Monster's Ball) latest film entitled Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' by Sapphire seems to have Academy Awards winner writen all over it, with Oprah Winfrey attached to the production as executive producer and familiar names in the ensemble cast include singers Mariah Carey and Lenny Kravitz.
The film's title tells us it is an adaptation of a popular novel and the author, Sapphire also makes a cameo appearance in the film. Set in Harlem in 1987, Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' by Sapphire tells of a sixteen year old African-American girl named Claireece 'Precious' Jones, who struggles in silence to cope with violence and emotional and physical abuse at home and at school. She is obese, illiterate and pregnant with her second child after being raped again by her estranged father. Her mother hits her, yells at her, treats her like a slave and accuses her of stealing her husband.When her illiteracy is discovered, Precious is offered a chance to study at a special school which will change the course of her life journey.
Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' by Sapphire is a film of hope, determination and overcoming the curveballs life throws at you, to regain the self-respect, dignity and control in one's life.
Early reviews for Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' by Sapphire have been very positive, generating Oscar buzz for the film and its cast.
The film and its cast has already won numerous awards, including the Supporting Actress of the Year Award at the recent Capri Film Festival for Mariah Carey. The film has received three nominations (Best Drama Picture, Best Lead Actress, Best Supporting Actress) for the 2010 Golden Globes and three nominations (Outstanding Cast, Outstanding Female Lead Role, Outstanding Female Supporting Role) for the 2010 Screen Actors Guild Awards.
Possible Oscar nominations include Best Lead Actress for Gabourey Sidibe who makes her feature film debut in the title role, Best Picture, Best Screenplay Adaptation, Best Director, and Best Supporting Actress for Mo'Nique who plays the abusive mother.
The film is currently screening in select cinemas for a limited time in the US and will screen in Australian cinemas during February 2010.
