Oscars 2010: Potential Best Motion Picture Nomination – Invictus

Sure-fire Hit by Linh
A film which features strong leading actors such as Morgan Freeman and Matt Damon, is directed by Clint Eastwood and concerns the inspirational work of Nelson Mandela, is definitely a hot contender for Academy Awards nominations. The latest Hollywood biopic is Invictus, based on John Carlin's book 'Playing the Enemy: Nelson Mandela and the Game that Made a Nation', and the film's name is a Latin word meaning 'invincible'. It is also the name of a short poem written by British poet William Ernest Henley in 1875, which Nelson Mandela read and recited to himself while he was imprisoned on Robben Island.
Invictus is part historical drama and part sports flick, with the premise of the film surrounding Nelson Mandela's attempt to unite black and white South Africans through the shared love of rugby. The film is set after the end of apartheid with Mandela released from prison, and becomes South Africa's first black President. President Mandela decides to support the Springboks rugby team and forms an alliance with star player Francois Pienaar (Matt Damon) to win the World Cup.
Reviews from preview screenings of Invictus have been mostly positive and largely praising Morgan Freeman's convincing portrayal of Nelson Mandela; Clint Eastwood's handling of the subject matter was balanced and Matt Damon as a muscled-up rugby player looked great but his accent was wobbly.
Invictus has Oscar-worthiness for lead and supporting role performances, directing, musical score and screenplay, but may lose favour over too much time spent on the sports field rather than the human relationships developing off field.
Invictus screens in Australian cinemas from Thursday 21 January 2010.

Thanks for your comments, and I really appreciate them.
I put 'fun' in my blog name because I think films should be fun to watch, to make, to write about and to talk about. I'm happy that you like it.
Cheers!

It would be great to see a well known personality portraying Jonah Lomu, but they've got Zak Feaunati playing him in the film.
Cheers!
