It's been a while since Quentin Tarantino has created an original masterpiece, but his latest film Inglourious Basterds is worth the wait and has Academy Awards potential.
Inglourious Basterds is set in a parallel world of Nazi-occupied France in the 1940s, and divided into five chapters (1. Once Upon a Time In Nazi Occupied France. 2. Inglourious Basterds. 3. German Nights in Paris. 4. Operation Kino. 5. Revenge of the Giant Face). The plot is interwoven through the five chapters and it all comes together, for the characters as well as the audience, in the end.

The main protagonist Lt. Aldo Raine (Brad Pitt) is first seen addressing his newly formed Jewish-American commando unit comprised of eight men, and are known as 'The Basterds'. He explains to them how they will cause havoc to all Nazi soldiers who cross their path and de-scalp every one of them. In Paris, a Jewish woman named Shosanna (Mélanie Laurent) runs a cinema and she is plotting revenge after witnessing the murder of her family at the hands of the Nazis. Shosanna meets a German war hero named Frederick (Daniel Brühl)) who suggests she host the premiere of a Josef Goebbels (Sylvester Groth) propaganda films at her cinema. She takes up the suggestion and soon The Basterds hear that high-ranking Nazis, including Adolf Hitler (Martin Wuttke), will be attending this special screening. The Basterds plan to launch a mass killing of the Nazis while Shosanna has plans of her own.

The ensemble cast is excellent, although some characters are played in an over-the-top and outrageous manner. Brad Pitt gives one of his best performances as the film's hero Aldo Raine and Christoph Waltz as the cruel Nazi Colonel Hans Landa, is one of the nastiest, ironic and absurd villains to grace the screen in a long time.

Inglourious Basterds would attract possible Academy Award nominations in Best Film, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, Best Supporting Actor, Best Cinematography and Best Editing.
