The Heart of Music by Linh
Small independent films are starting to make inroads into the cinema-sphere where big-budget blockbusters used to reign supreme. We’re also seeing more indie films heading into Academy Award territory than before. One such film is Crazy Heart.
Crazy Heart was about to meet its fate on the DVD rentals scrapheap until Fox Searchlight stepped in, just as they did for last year’s multi-Oscar winning film Slumdog Millionaire.
Unlike Slumdog Millionaire, Crazy Heart ventures far from the feel-good and fun factor.
The film is based on the novel by Thomas Cobb and stars Jeff Bridges as an ageing and alcoholic country music singer named Bad Blake, who has survived four marriages, years of touring, plenty of backstage vomitting and too many one-night stands.
His glory days are over and he now plays at bars and a bowling alley. Bad Blake is persuaded to accept an interview with a young newspaper reporter and single mum played by Maggie Gyllenhaal. The two form a strong rapport and a deep connection but neither of them want to commit, as they have both made bad decisions in the past.
Previews for Crazy Heart have been well received by critics and they’ve praised Jeff Bridges and Maggie Gyllenhaal for their performances. However, there is a consensus that the storyline is bland and weak but the film is saved by the excellent cast and lead performances. The music by Stephen Bruton and T-Bone Burnett is a moving and mesmerising experience that adds to the emotion of the drama. The film has already been likened to The Wrestler which re-launched Mickey Rourke's acting career.
Possible Oscar nominations for Crazy Heart include Best Picture, Best Lead Actor, Best Lead Actress, Best Song, and Best Music Score.
Crazy Heart is currently screening in limited release in the US and soon to open nationally there. A release date is yet to be confirmed for Australia.
