During the past twelve months, audiences have been enthralled by the use of 3D in animated films such as Up and Coraline. Before long, we'll be seeing a swag of old animated films brought back to the cinemas and screening in glorious 3D. Disney's The Princess and the Frog bucks the trend and was deliberately produced in the original 2D format to convey the timelessness of the art of hand-drawn animation. Currently, Toy Story 1 and 2 are screening in 3D at select cinemas across Australia, with Toy Story 3 also being released in 3D in the next few months.

Possible Best Animated Feature Oscar Nominations include:

Up (Pixar Animation Studio):

ANIMAL ANTICS: Carl (Edward Asner) tries to sneak off while Russell (Jordan Nagai) keeps Dug (Bob Peterson) from annoying Kevin (Bob Peterson) in the animated film Up. Image: Pixar Animation Studio.

Following the death of his beloved wife and childhood sweetheart Ellie, retired 78 year old former balloon salesman Carl was to be taken into a retirement home, but he decides to fulfil a promise he made to Ellie.
They were going to find Paradise Falls together in South America and place their house on the edge of the falls, just as Ellie had drawn in her Adventure Book when she was a teenager.
Carl’s adventure to ‘the land lost in time’ begins when he ties thousands of coloured balloons to his fireplace leading out through his chimney, which lifts his entire house up into the air.
He is joined by an optimistic and excitable young Wilderness Explorer scout named Russell, they discover a rare giant rainbow bird which Russell calls Kevin, and befriends an affectionate golden retriever named Dug.

Director: Pete Docter, Bob Peterson

Voice Cast: Edward Asner, Christopher Plummer, Jordan Nagai, Bob Peterson, Delroy Lindo, John Ratzenberger, Elie Docter, Jeremy Leary, Pete Docter, Jerome Ranft, Josh Colley, David Kaye, Danny Mann

9 (Starz Animation):

MAGICAL: 5 (John C. Reilly) and 9 (Elijah Wood) attempt to use the power of the talisman in the animated film 9. Image Starz Animation.

Set in a post-apocalyptic time in the aftermath of a war between humans and machines, the story follows the restoration and renewal of humanity in the tiny hands of nine rag dolls or 'stitchpunks' which are handcrafted by a scientist as a last attempt to defeat the machines and save what's left of humankind. The scientist knows his dolls will survive the poisoned and desolate wasteland better than the remaining humans, and gives each stitchpunk a piece of his soul. He also gives each one a number (using the myths and workings of numerology) that represents their character traits. He dies as he completes his final stitchpunk, and the last doll plays an integral role in the story.

Director: Shane Acker

Voice Cast: Elijah Wood, Christopher Plummer, Jennifer Connelly, Martin Landau, John C.Reilly, Crispin Glover, Fred Tatasciore, Alan Oppenheimer, Tom Kane, Helen Wilson.

Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs (Sony Pictures Animation):

HAILING HAMBURGERS: Sam (Anna Faris) and Flint (Bill Hader) stare in stunned silence as hamburgers fall from the sky in the animated film Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs. Image: Sony Pictures Animation.

An intrepid inventor, Flint Lockwood's goal in life is to invent something that will benefit humankind.
Flint lives on the island of Swallow Falls with his father Tim Lockwood, and has created numerous gadgets and gizmos that have all ended in disaster for himself, his family and the community.
Flint comes up with an idea to create food by adding water, with an aim to solve the world's hunger crisis. Unfortunately, things go wrong and his food machine is blasted into the air where the water from clouds causes the machine to rain hamburgers. Flint achieves instant fame and popularity, with many requests for food flowing in from everyone.
It all goes awry, when Nature fights back, causing Spaghetti and Meatball cyclones and floods.

Director: Chris Miller, Phil Lord

Voice Cast: Bill Hader, Anna Faris, Andy Samberg, James Caan, Bruce Campbell, Mr T., Neil Patrick Harris, Benjamin Bratt, Bobb'e Thompson, Al Roker, Lauren Graham.

This is the first stop-motion animated feature film to be shot entirely in 3D. The story follows a little girl named Coraline who is bored and fed up with being neglected by her parents. She discovers a bricked up passage behind a hidden door which leads to a distorted parallel world of wonderment and danger.

Based on the book of the same name by much-loved children's author Roald Dahl, it is the story of a rebellious and adventurous Mr. Fox and his friends who attempt to outwit the three mean and nasty farmers named Boggis, Bunce and Bean. He steals chickens, turkeys and apple cider from the three farmers, until his wife makes him promise to end his wild-ways of hen-heckling, turkey-taking and cider-stealing nocturnal activities. Mr Fox soon returns to his old ways and the consequences on his family and friends force him to act quick and think smart.

Disney returns to its traditional story-telling of fairytales and dreams come true in hand-drawn visuals in 2D format with a contemporary re-telling of the classic children's fairytale. In Disney's updated version, the story is set in the mid 1920s New Orleans with an attractive and determined young African-American woman named Tiana who only dreams of saving enough money to open her own restaurant. She encounters a talking frog in her bedroom who claims to be Prince Naveen and is under the spell of a voodoo witchdoctor.
