Oscar Stars Get The Stamp of Approval by Linh
For those who still send snail mail or for those who are philatelically inclined, a new set of postage stamps have been released in the lead up to Australia Day.
Since 1997, Australia Post has each year recognised the achievements of Australians with a stamp release marking the Australia Post Australian Legends Award.
The honourees receive a gold replica stamp at an Australia Day lunch or ceremony.
This year, Australia Post honours four Australian Academy Award winners - Geoffrey Rush (Shine), Cate Blanchett (The Aviator), Russell Crowe (Gladiator) and Nicole Kidman (The Hours) - for their contribution to the arts and entertainment industry in Australia and overseas.
Technically, Russell Crowe is a New Zealander, but Australians have claimed him as their own. Crowe appeared in numerous films in Australia including Romper Stomper and The Sum of Us before finding fame in the US.
What they said about getting stamped:
CATE BLANCHETT: " I am utterly, deeply, humbled and chuffed by the fact that I’m a stamp. I’m going to be licked by millions of Australians and I can’t wait. It is also recognising the value of the arts in Australia. It brings it into general consumption and if I’m part of that, I feel intensely proud,:
GEOFFREY RUSH: "It’s a classy thing to know you’re on security paper."
NICOLE KIDMAN: "I have a vested interest in Australia. I want my children to live here at certain times of their life and see how wonderful it is. It would be lovely for them to lick a stamp, put it on an envelope and say 'that's my mum'."
The stamps depict the four actors in and out of character with Blanchett in Elizabeth, Rush in Shine, Crowe in Gladiator and Kidman in Moulin Rouge.
My guess is : If Heath Ledger wins the Academy Award posthumously this year for his diabolical role as The Joker in The Dark Knight, expect a set of postage stamps to be released in his honour some time in the future.
