The recently released trailer for the film The Social Network appears to be a legal drama about the ownership and copyright issues regarding the creation of the currently most popular social networking site Facebook, rather than about the website itself.
The film deals with the breakdown of friendships as a result of success, betrayal, selfishness and popularity. It is also a glimpse into the mind of a young Harvard student Mark Zuckerberg (played by Jesse Eisenberg), an entrepreneur who was way ahead of his time with social networking, but his egotistical arrogance brought him undone.
The film is a dramatisation of Facebook’s origin and the legal wrangle between its founders and financiers. The litigation in the film refers to a breach of contract/IP theft lawsuit brought against Zuckerberg by fellow Harvard students Tyler Winklevoss (Josh Pence) and Cameron Winklevoss (Armie Hammer) in 2004. Although the film portrays Zuckerberg in a negative light, there is no denying his genius at spearheading technological innovation.
The music and lyrics of Radiohead’s ‘Creep’, sung by a choir of children, makes the film look even more sinister. Perhaps the song is referring to Facebook creator Mark Zuckerberg as a creep, or even those trawling Facebook for friendship, networking or paedophilia could be considered creeps. The opening scenes appear to convey the attachment of users to the Facebook site and the openness in sharing the most intimate and private moments in people’s lives. This is the key to Mark Zuckerberg’s vision for Facebook. Sharing everything with everyone, everywhere. Little did he envisage a backlash regarding privacy concerns a few years later.
Director David Fincher (Fight Club, Zodiac) is currently working on the American re-make of the Swedish hit film The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, and has applied his usual mastery to bring forth this classy film. Teaser trailers released earlier for The Social Network show snippets of the film but the recent trailer gives a clearer picture of the film’s storyline.
The Social Network will be released later this year during the busiest time for Academy Award voters, and the film has already been mentioned as a potential Oscar contender in various categories, including possible nominations for its leading cast – Jesse Eisenberg, Andrew Garfield and Justin Timberlake.
