BRIGHT YOUNG TALENT

October 30th 2011 10:36
Emerging Artists by Linh

Talented, *young performers, whose names are being mentioned in certain social and media circles, are emerging from obscurity to possibly become the latest sought-after talents in Hollywood. Some have already starred alongside the biggest names in Hollywood while others are soon to appear in star-studded casts in upcoming films.

The following performers are currently finding intriguing and challenging roles in independent and big-budget commercial films, and are gradually gaining attention for their performances.

ELIZABETH OLSEN:

Elizabeth is the youngest of the Olsen sisters (Mary Kate and Ashley) and apparently, the most talented if you have seen her performance in the film Martha Marcy May Marlene, and she’s landed a lead role in the upcoming film Very Good Girls with Dakota Fanning and Dustin Hoffman. However, one film is not enough to determine the extent of Elizabeth Olsen’s acting skills, yet it is certain her theatre background will ensure her characters will be betrayed with nuance and distinction.

JESSICA CHASTAIN:

Jessica has already appeared in two very strong and commendable performances as Brad Pitt’s wife in Terrence Malick’s Tree of Life and as the ditzy but affable Celia Foote in The Help. She has recently won the 2011 Hollywood Breakthrough Award (Tree of Life, The Debt and The Help, Coriolanus) and Ensemble of the Year Award shared with the cast from The Help.

Jessica also has a theatre background and her beautiful and graceful portrayal as Mrs. O’Brien in Tree of Life earned praise from her co-stars Sean Penn and Brad Pitt as well as director Terrence Malick. Malick has cast her in an untitled project for 2012, which co-stars Rachel McAdams and Javier Bardem.

BEN WHISHAW:

Ben has played some unusual and interesting roles such as Jean-Baptiste Grenouille in Perfume: The Story of a Murderer directed by Tom Tykwer, one of Bob Dylan’s incarnations in I’m Not There and the English poet John Keats in Bright Star. Ben’s upcoming film projects include Cloud Atlas directed by the Wachowskis and Tom Tykwer, where he will play multiple characters and he has secured a role in the new James Bond film directed by Sam Mendes currently titled Bond 23. Ben’s eclectic choice in film roles and his ability to make a character engaging, believable and captivating means he will be an actor in demand.

GEMMA WARD:

Gemma was better known as a model, but immediately before turning heads and strutting on the catwalk in fashion shows for Christian Dior, Yves Saint-Laurent and Gucci, she was cast in Elissa Down’s short film Pink Pajamas. Down was so impressed with Gemma that she later cast her in the acclaimed film The Black Balloon and Gemma was only too happy to take a break from modelling to try her hand at acting. Gemma has since appeared in the horror drama The Strangers with Liv Tyler, as a mermaid in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides and is currently filming The Great Gatsby, directed by Baz Luhrmann, with Leonardo DiCaprio, Carey Mulligan and Bollywood star Amitabh Bachchan.
Gemma’s large and expressive eyes help bring out the character’s emotions and her magnetic charm onscreen captivates the audience, making her an actor with a bright future.

*All actors’ ages have not been disclosed as a sign of support for SAG and AFTRA who condemn IMDb’s and other internet sites’ practice of publishing the ages of actors, producers, screenwriters or directors without their consent. Those who choose to disclose their age are welcome to do so. SAG and AFTRA claim this information gives rise to age discrimination for “most of the affected actors who aren't celebrities, but rank-and-file actors whose names are unknown to the general public” (Variety, 2011).
